It is interesting to find out all about the timber cutters who started this region. In short Murwillumbah and the surrounding areas started as Timber Cutter Towns.
Timber was cut out of the local areas then dragged to, on the south side of the range to the Tweed River. On the north side of the Nerang River, from there some timber was used on the Gold Coast. The rest was shipped to the major Cities.
The Timber cutters flocked to our area because of the abundance of Cedar in the mid-1800’s. After the Cedar run out and the towns were colonized Sugar Cane, Small Crops and Diary were the main sources of income.
